Freelance Writing Opportunities

The popularity of the Internet has provided a broad range of opportunities for educators.  With the economic challenges both part-time and full-time faculty are facing as the result of funding cuts and the resulting loss of teaching opportunities, ideas relating to alternative income sources are of obvious importance.  One income source that I've been focusing on is freelance writing opportunities.  My first effort involved going through the application process and being accepted as a writer for Demand Studios (www.demandstudios.com).  You are not going to get rich writing Internet content articles (with a typical fee of around $15 for a 200 word article).  But there are numerous examples of writers who frequent the private forums on the Demand Studios website who have shared reaching income levels in excess of $2,000/mo.  Yes that means writing something in excess of 135 articles in a month, but it really isn't that challenging to put together 200 words about a relatively simple "how to do" sort of article.

While my earnings since starting my writing career with Demand Studios last July have not been sizable, that can be explained away given the efforts I've expended have been minimal.  You can view an example of one of the articles I've written by pointing your browser to: http://www.ehow.com/about_5201305_bank-rights-home-foreclosure.html

Another freelance opportunity I'd encourage those interested in writing to investigate is Studio101 (see www.studio101.com).  Its website lists a number of reasons for considering freelancing with them.  Listed opportunities include:

  1. Receive lifelong royalties generated by your articles.
  2. Extend the reach of your work by introducing it to millions of
      readers  monthly.
  3. Build your writing portfolio and enhance your profile and
      reputation online.
  4. Interact with an established network of professional editors
      and writers.

My hope as we all struggle through the economic hardships that will result as budget cuts are implemented, is that promoting ideas like freelance writing will lessen the economic burdens we will all face.
